Panhala To Pawankhind Trek
Walk the Legendary Escape Route of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj
Overview
The Panhala to Pavankhind Historical Trek is one of Maharashtra’s most iconic endurance treks, combining history, adventure, and nature into an unforgettable two-day journey. Covering approximately 51 kilometres, this legendary route retraces the historic escape of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj from Panhala Fort to Vishalgad during the famous Battle of Pavankhind in 1660.
Unlike a regular weekend trek, this expedition is a tribute to one of the greatest chapters in Maratha history. Every trail, forest, and plateau along the route carries historical significance, allowing trekkers to experience the same landscape crossed by Shivaji Maharaj and the brave Baji Prabhu Deshpande.
The adventure begins at the majestic Panhala Fort, one of Maharashtra’s largest hill forts, before leading participants through dense forests, traditional villages, open grasslands, river crossings, and the spectacular Masai Pathar. The vast plateau offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Sahyadri ranges and serves as one of the highlights of the expedition.
On the first day, trekkers cover long distances through varied terrain before reaching Karpevadi, where a comfortable local homestay and authentic Maharashtrian dinner provide much-needed rest. The second day continues through beautiful forest trails before reaching the historic battlefield of Pavankhind, where participants can explore the memorial dedicated to the supreme sacrifice of Baji Prabhu Deshpande and the Maratha warriors.
The expedition is designed for trekkers with good physical fitness who wish to experience both endurance trekking and Maharashtra’s rich heritage. Professional trek leaders, certified guides, first-aid support, and carefully planned logistics ensure a safe and memorable journey.
Throughout the trek, participants enjoy delicious local meals, scenic landscapes, village hospitality, and countless opportunities for photography. The combination of history, nature, culture, and adventure makes this one of the finest historical trekking experiences in India.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast, an experienced trekker, or someone looking to challenge yourself on a long-distance mountain trail, the Panhala to Pavankhind Trek promises an inspiring journey that goes far beyond adventure—it is a walk through one of India’s greatest historical legacies.
